Following the Romantic Road, this cycling journey winds through medieval towns, picturesque countryside, and dreamlike castles of Bavaria. The route is named for its timeless charm, where frescoed houses and alpine vistas create an atmosphere of old-world romance.
From Augsburg’s Renaissance splendor to Neuschwanstein’s fairytale turrets, each day offers a new chapter in Bavaria’s breathtaking landscapes.
This stretch of Bavaria blends history, culture, and nature in a landscape shaped by ancient trade routes and royal ambition. Augsburg, once a powerful Free Imperial City, bears the mark of the wealthy Fugger family in its grand fountains and the world’s oldest social housing complex.
The journey follows the Lech River past medieval towns and pristine lakes, where Baroque churches reflect centuries of tradition. As the Alps draw near, the scenery shifts to rolling meadows and shimmering waters, leading to Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle – a vision of medieval fantasy set against dramatic mountain peaks.
This tour covers 280 kilometers over six cycling days, with an average daily distance of 45 km. The elevation gain varies, with the highest climb on Day 4 at 800 meters. The final stretch back to Augsburg, however, is mostly flat.
The route consists of paved cycle paths, quiet country roads, and a few gravel sections. It is suitable for leisure cyclists with moderate to advanced fitness, as it features some longer ascents in the alpine foothills.
With GPS tracks, a personalized digital itinerary, and full support, you can focus on the ride while we handle the accommodations and other details, ensuring a seamless and enriching journey through Bavaria’s most captivating landscapes.
