Hiking: 6.5 km and 700 m of elevation gain/loss
If you're looking for a rewarding adventure in Slovenia's highlands without the challenge of Mt. Triglav, this tour is an excellent choice. You will be climbing Mt. Viševnik, the highest easily accessible peak in Triglav National Park.
While Viševnik is less demanding than many other mountains in the region, it offers equally stunning Alpine scenery and spectacular views.
Standing at 2050 meters, Viševnik is accessible to hikers with basic gear and a desire to explore Slovenia's high Alpine environment. The hike to the summit is more manageable than other peaks of similar elevation, making it suitable for families and hikers with limited experience.
The route begins with a pleasant walk through the pristine forests of the Pokljuka Plateau, gradually transitioning to an ascent along a ski slope. The trail continues through increasingly sparse forest, eventually giving way to rugged terrain that provides sweeping views of Pokljuka, Lake Bohinj, and the surrounding mountains.
The moderately steep climb leads to the southern slope, which brings you to a scenic ridge just before the summit. From here, the highest peaks of the Julian Alps feel almost within arm's reach. Viševnik offers breathtaking views of Mt. Triglav and a panoramic vista of other notable peaks, including Mali and Veliki Draški Vrh, Debela Peč, and the picturesque Pokljuka Plateau.
You'll also enjoy sights of the Lower Bohinj Mountains, the western Julian Alps, the northern Sava Plain, and even the Karawanks and Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the east.
